HOUSTON (AP) - A DeSoto native is one of 32 students selected for the prestigious Rhodes Scholars program that gives graduates an all-expenses-paid two years at Oxford University.
Twenty-one-year-old Harvard University student Nina Yancy says Saturday she was intrigued after talking to others who had participated in the program and visiting Oxford while interning at Britain’s House of Commons over the summer. But she says she did not think she would be selected and is still “shocked” and grateful.
Yancy plans to study comparative social policy and global health science when she goes to Oxford in October 2013. Ultimately, she hopes to work in Washington.
Yancy, who lost her mother at a young age, called her father after getting the news. She says he walked out of a meeting so he could “scream.”
